Scenic Group Walk in Old Frontenac/Methodist Campus

The Walking Lake Pepin (walkinglakepepin.com) group met at the public beach/boat launch in Old Frontenac on Wednesday June19.  It was a lovely night for a walk and the group took advantage of the lovely setting and learned about the history of this area of Old Frontenac.
This was the setting where the two Garrard brothers, who first settled in Frontenac, asked the riverboat captain to put them ashore so they could explore (and hunt) in the very photogenic area.
The group walk progressed through the site of the former Methodist Campus. Jim Schreck told the group about the many changes that were made to the original buildings that were in part a warehouse, then a hotel and then extensively remodeled into a private residence.   The work was mainly planned and executed by Bill and Linda Flies, converting the former summer cabins into lovely year-round homes is amazing to see.
Photos were shared with the group (provided by the late Bill Flies at a walk 4 years ago) showing the before and after site changes.
The group continued along Lake Ave Way to where many private homes have been built and remodeled along the road.
A light breeze kept the temperature very comfortable and the mosquitoes at bay making it a pleasant evening for the 14 walkers in the group.
The next WLP group walk will be on Wednesday, June 26 at 6:30 pm, meeting at Underwood Park parking lot on 10th St.
The walk will be led by Katie Himanga who will take the group to visit the site of the Indian mounds in the Jewel Nursery properties that once was Harry Brostrom’s (a Jewel employee) farm.
All community members are welcome to come walk. Watch Facebook (Walking Lake Pepin) for any changes due to weather.  Questions, call Patty Svien, 651 345 4383.
There will be no WLP group walk the week of the 4th of July.
