Walking Lake Pepin/WLP walkers (walkinglakepepin.com) explored the Lake City Catholic Workers Farm on Goodhue County 5 on June 12th.  The Catholic Workers Farm’s mission encompasses the goal of agricultural practices which are sustainable, economically sound and socially just.  They welcome visitors to cooperatively learn these practical skills and enjoy the food the farm produces.
Paul and Sara Freid, owners of the farm, led the group through a walk in their native prairie highlighting the many prairie grasses and flowers growing there.  They explained that these fields that are not cultivated for crops are very beneficial as they replenish the soil with nutrients, reduce soil erosion and provide habitat for a plethora of insects, birds and animals.
The farm grows vegetables and produces kombucha (fermented tea) that they sell on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 2 pm on their farm site on Goodhue County 5.
A new initiative they have embarked on in cooperation with the U of MN is building and use of a Deep Winter Green house (DWG). The DWG is designed to limit the amount of fossil fuel it takes to grow crop in the winter months.  A DWG has been built on the farm and will be used to grow a variety of lettuces, herbs, Asian greens and sprouts
The WLP group was treated to tastings of their Kombucha (ginger, apple mint, honey lemon balm). Kombucha is a fermented tea made from tea, sugar, healthy bacteria and yeast. Though studies on its benefits are limited some studies report improvement in gut health, strengthening of the immune system and limiting inflammation.

Wednesday, June19, the WLP group will walk on Lake Avenue Way in Old Frontenac. Meet up will be at the Florence Township beach. To get to the beach location turn on Goodhue County 2 before the wayside rest on Hwy 61 and follow County 2 going past the Villa into Old Frontenac. Do not make the left turn on County 2 toward Frontenac State Park. Instead veer right and continue down Lake Avenue Way to Frontenac Beach parking on the right.
The group will walk along the road through the Methodist Campus site to the end of the street.
All are welcome to attend.  For any changes due to weather for the WLP Group Walk please check the Facebook page, Walking Lake Pepin. Or call Patty Svien, 651 380 8752.
