Walk Local, Shop Local   

Started in 2008 as a wellness project by Lake City resident Patty Svien, "Walking Lake Pepin"  continues in it's 13th year in 2020. 
This year's slogan  "Walk Local, Shop Local"  was chosen to encourage all of us to increase our physical activity by walking to downtown Lake City and supporting our local businesses during the Hwy 61 reconstruction.  We can improve the health of both our bodies and our business community. 

The Walking Lake Pepin fitness challenge invites children, adults, teens, families and seniors in the Lake City area to participate by starting, continuing or increasing their physical activity. Sign up and make a commitment, count your minutes and celebrate your success of reaching your goal of  "Walk Local, Shop Local" during the 10 week event.  

Again this year Walking Lake Pepin committee continues to make this year's event more inclusive allowing all forms of moderate physical activity to be counted for minutes toward your goal. So whether you like to walk, bike, jog, swim laps, use the treadmill at the gym or love water aerobics, you can choose a variety of activities to count for minutes to reach your goal.  The only requirement is that the activity raises your heart rate and is of at least 10 minutes in duration.  So if you are gardening or doing some yard or house work it counts, if it meet these requirements.  

Lake City residents can sign up (online or at Treats and Treasures on Washington St.) to achieve a healthier lifestyle by committing to a any  of moderate physical activities listed for a minimum of 150 minutes a week or more  over a 10 week period.  A log sheet to record minutes can be downloaded from this site or picked up at Treats and Treasures.  A BINGO game is also planned to encourage support for local businesses. 
As in the past walkers can qualify for entry into drawings for Lake City Chamber Bucks by participation in the weekly group walks,
turning in their log sheets and BINGO cards for the finale event.   


This year’s event will start Sunday, May 31 and continue until Saturday, August 8.  Weekly group walking events will occur on Wednesday evenings  at 6:30 pm.   These events will take you walking around the Lake City area and help  you to meet other walkers.

Group walking events will follow Minnesota Covid 19 guidelines including;
social distancing, wearing of masks and breaking into groups of no more than 10 people when walking.

A list of the weekly walking locations can be downloaded from this website or picked up at Treats and Treasures on Washington Street. 

The event is free.  All fitness levels can participate.  You pick the amount of minutes you want to challenge yourself to each week. It is that simple. Make the healthy decision and click “Sign up” from the menu bar above.
