I went for my first walk of the season on the River Walk last Thursday starting at the Thursday Night Market at the beach to Roschen Park and back. I met up with Paul and Wanda Myers down by the Marina as they were out walking their minutes for the Walking Lake Pepin fitness challenge.
We both have been in Lake City for over 30 years and commented to each other how many improvements along the river front that we have seen since we both have moved to town.
The new outer harbor and break water was started in 1984 soon after I moved to town expanding the harbor by 300 additional slips. And recently the new marina building, with the only lighthouse on the river, was completed a few years ago.
The Marina play park equipment has been replaced and new benches and picnic tables are there for every one to enjoy. Roschen Park had a face lift a few years ago to the delight of the fisherman who use that boat launch and Ohuta Park has been freshened up as well. The scupture honoring Ralph Sammuelson and the "Birthplace of Waterskiing" is a much visited landmark.
The area at the interusection of Hwy 61 and Jewel Avenue now has a memorial stone to honor our Veterans with benchs and picnic tables inviting visitors to sit and look out and watch the sail boats or wild life that frequents the river front.
And of course the River Walk has been one of the best additons to the river front. This 2.5 mile river front sidewalk provides not only a safe walking path but great scenery and a perfect spot to catch a look at an eagle overhead or a place to watch the beautiful sun rises and sunsets on Lake Pepin.
Yup, we decided we were pretty lucky to live in a community like Lake City where the natural beauty of the town and river front has been preserved and enhanced by our city leaders and many community service groups and residents.
This weekend replicas of the Nina and Pinta from Columbus's historic voyage to the "new world" are docked in the inner harbor. Visitors can board the boats and imagine what it must have been like to set sail on an adventure that would change the course of history.
Also a reminder that everyone is invited to Hok-si-la Park at 6:30 on Tuesday July 16th for a group walk on the 2 miles of trails in the Park. Joanne Klees will share with the group a recent biking trip she took to the NW United States as she works to have a life of "Active Living. " We will have a campfire and s'mores following the walk.
On Thursday, July 18th bikers can gather at Underwood Park on 10th Street for a 14 miles "Lake Pepin Ramble" south to the Sportman's Club, north to Hok-si-la Park and back to Underwood.
Both events will be cancelled and re-scheudled if it rains.
