Rhea Kontos from "Nordic Walk this Way" was in Lake City July 19th teaching correct Nordic Walking technique and explaining the differences between Nordic Walking and trekking. She also explained the benefits of Nordic Walking, which include improved posture and calorie burn when using the poles The humidity and temperature were moderate and a nice breeze was coming off Lake Pepin to make a very enjoyable evening for all who participated.
Nordic Walking to be next Walking Lake Pepin Event
The Walking Lake Pepin committee invites walkers who want to increase their calorie burn and add a little challenge to their walking routine to a Nordic Walking Clinic to be held July 19th at 6:30 to 8 pmpm at Ohuta Park.
Nordic Walking is ‘fitness walking using specially designed poles". Adding poles, which is similar to using poles with cross country skiing, can increase the calories burned during walking, facilitate strength increase in the upper body and improve posture and balance while walking.
Rhea Kontos, a trainer for the Great Lake Nordic Walking group will be in Lake City to train participants in the correct technique to maximize benefits from Nordic Walking. She will bring poles for all particpants to use during the clinic and will have poles for sale if anyone is interested in obtaining poles.
In the Mayo Clinic May 2012 issue of the online Mayo Clinic Health Letter it was reported that: “Practitioners of Nordic walking typically experience slightly higher heart rates than occur with ordinary walking. And, the body consumes more oxygen. In one study, Nordic walking burned about 20 percent more calories over one mile compared to normal walking on the same course. The extra calorie burn may occur because Nordic walking works the muscles of the arms, shoulders, chest, back and torso more than ordinary walking.”
All community members are invited to participate and need to register for the clinic at Treats and Treasure on Washington Streeet prior to the event. There is a $5.00 fee which must be paid at the time of registration. The minimun number of particpants to run the class is 8 with a maximum of 15 particpants. If there is enough interest an earlier session at 4:30 pm will be offered.
The Lake City Family Physicians Clinic of Lake City has donated toward this training allowing the clinic to be offered at half its regular fee.
