Why 150 minutes a week? Because the best research in physical activity and health benefits has demonstrated that this is the dose of exercise needed to achieve health benefits. Just as you need a specific dose of medicine to get the most benefit there is a level of physical activity that is required to make a difference in a person’s health status.
If you are a first time participate or have been inactive, this is the goal that you should set for the 10 week period. If you are a regular walker challenge yourself to increase your weekly minutes by 30, 50 or 100 minutes. The more time spent walking the greater return in health benefits.
Why sign up??? Make your commitment by putting your name on the list. Download the log sheet and put it on the your frig to remind you every day to get your walk done. Keep yourself accountable by walking with your spouse. Challenge a co-worker or neighbor to walk. Make a friendly wager with someone and support each other as you reach your goal.
Our theme, “Active Living 2011”, was chosen to emphasize how Lake City offers its citizens a great environment for walking as well as other opportunities to participate in community sponsored physical activity events. We encourage Walking Lake Pepin participants to also consider joining the Tour de Pepin bike event and the Rotary sponsored Circle of Life 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk happening this June.
Let’s get physical, and celebrate “Active Living 2011”!!!!
