Twelve Walking Lake Pepin participants met out at Hok-si-la park last Thursday for a hike through the park, a campfire with S’mores and a tour of the new camping cabins by park manager, Joanne Klees.  Three cabins have been built at the park this past year with the cooperative planning and funding of the Casey T. O’Neil Foundation and the City of Lake City.  The cabins meet Americans with Disability Act specifications, sleep six, have heat and air conditioning and a fire ring for cooking outside. Joanne reported that they are rented for the summer most weekends, July 8 and 13 one cabin is open and the next availability is Aug 13. There are plenty of weekdays that the cabin is available for rent.  Check with Joanne at the Hok-si-la Park office for details and all available dates.
Additional group walks are planned during the 10 week Walking Lake Pepin fitness challenge this summer.  Next Thursday, June 16th the group will meet at the Lake City Marina parking lot at 6 PM and carpool out to Frontenac State Park for a walk.  There is a great overlook at the top of the bluff at the park that is a must see.  There is no group walk planned on the 23rd but group walks will resume on July 30th.  All group walks will meet at 6 PM.  Thursday June 30th the group will meet at Underwood Park on 10th Street at 6 PM.  The group will walk over to the Lake City Community Garden across 10th Street where Jim Schreck will tell the group about the history and success of the Lake City Community Garden. After the short presentation the group will walk up Goodhue County 5 and take the paved trail to the Jewel and make a loop on Green Parkway and Woodland Way and back to Underwood Park.
Walking Lake Pepin group walks planned in July and August include;
July 7th-Oak Street, featuring the best of Lake Cities’ historic homes.
July 14th- Old Frontenac Historic Walk
July 21st- The Jewel Clubhouse Drive from Cedar Ct to the Jewel Clubhouse.
July 28th- South Oak Street from Roschen Park to the Lake City Sportsman Club
August 4th- Miller Creek; hike along the creek plus presentation about Beekeeping August 11th-  Church Walk, walking tour to 6 of the churches in central Lake City.
Anyone interested can come and join in.  You do not have to have signed up for the Walking Lake Pepin challenge to participate in these group walks.  Walking distances will be approximately 2 miles. This is a great way to explore some new walking areas in Lake City and meet some like-minded walking enthusiasts.
You may even want to start at “Moai” walking group, (look it up), more about that later.
Anyone can still sign up for the Walking Lake Pepin fitness challenge.  Walking, biking, running, swimming and all moderate physical activities count.  Sign up continues at Treats and Treasures on Washington Street, LC Public Library, and Anytime Fitness on 7th Street. The “Elite Walking Challenge”, new this year,  and all the details for the Walking Lake Pepin 10 week summer fitness challenge can be found at walkinglakepepin.com or visit us on Facebook for more details.  It is summer so “Lace ‘em and Up and GO!” and get healthy and fit.
